(a.) Use quotation marks to enclose a direct quotation. A direct quotation is used to quote the author's language word for word.
Example:
Spoken Words: The Smith family owners of a 300-acre tract said we refuse to cut the timber because it might cause drainage problems.
Punctuated: The Smith family, owners of a 300-acre tract, said, “We refuse to cut the timber because it might cause drainage problems.”
