Quotation Marks – With Letters of the Alphabet
With Letters of the Alphabet
(a.) Use quotation marks around letters of the alphabet if they are not capitalized or if they are likely to be misread.
Examples:
Look at what is written after the letter “b” on the second page of Exhibit 9.
She called me the “b” word.
Does your last name end in “i-n” or “e-n”?
My first name ends with “i-e..” M-a-r-i-e.
He’s the president, with a capital P.
He put “x” dollars on the table in furtherance of his bet.

(b.) BUT both of these are correct:
The name of the street begins with a G.
The name of the street begins with a “g.”
Reason: The first example is correct because the name of the street is a proper noun. Notice that no quotation marks are used with the capital letter, only with the lowercase letter.

(c.) Do not put quotation marks around nth because it is a word.
Example:
He explores every alternative to the nth degree.
