(a.) If words are left out of a quotation, use an ellipsis mark to indicate the omitted words.
Example of full quotation:
The agency representative said, “We are unable to help everyone that we’d like to help because we don’t have the funds to do so.”
Example of omitted material with ellipsis:
The agency representative said, “We are unable to help everyone . . . because we don’t have the funds to do so.”
Example:
A. I told my brother, “I studied for ten years to work in this profession and I am not going to let hard times force me to quit.”
Q. When you said your brother said, “I studied for ten years . . . force me to quit,” were you referring to filing bankruptcy?
