Words and phrases introduced by such expressions as “so-called,” “marked,” “signed,” and “entitled” are enclosed in quotation marks.

 

Examples:

The box was marked “Fragile.”

He received a letter signed “A Concerned Citizen.”

The memo entitled “Moving Right Along” was in that folder.

He wrote “Approved” on the resolution.

 

(NOTE:  Do not quote words following “marked” or “labeled” if those words refer to exhibits.)

 

Examples:

The document is labeled Plaintiff’s Exhibit 5.

That letter is marked Defendant’s No. 1.
