Lesson 1.5 – Direct Quotations: Quoting a series of words or phrases
However, if the series of quoted words or phrases did not appear in this sequence in the original, use quotation marks around each word or phrase.
Example:
O’Reilly’s exact words were, “I think the last revision looks precise, informative, and thought-provoking.”
According to O’Reilly, the latest revision of the article looked “precise, informative, and thought-provoking.”
BUT: O’Reilly thinks the article looks “precise” and “informative.”
Example:
A. Andrew told me that my report was atrocious, thoughtless, and lacked creativity, so I told him, I quit.
Q. When you say that Andrew said it was “atrocious, thoughtless and lacked creativity,” what was he doing at the time?
-or-
A. Andrew told me that my report was atrocious, thoughtless, and lacked creativity, so I told him, I quit.
Q. Did Andrew give you any indication for it being “atrocious” and “thoughtless” and “lacked creativity?”
