Quotation Marks – Titles of Works

Titles of Works

(a.)  Use quotation marks to set off the titles of articles, chapters, essays, poems, reports, short stories, and songs.

Examples:

Was the crime committed after he read the chapter on “How to Crack a Safe”?

Poe’s poem “The Raven” is a dark piece.

(b.)  BUT use italics (preferred) or underlining for books, motion pictures, newspapers, magazines, journals, TV and radio shows, works of art, ships, planes, trains, and spacecraft.

 

Examples:

I read about it in Life magazine.

She cries every time she watches the movie Old Yeller.

We cruised to England on the Royal Princess.

(c.)  BUT capitalize the class or make of planes, ships, trains, spacecraft, and vehicles.

Examples:

The plane was a DC-10.

My neighbor has a Mazda Tribute.

My grandfather was the pilot of the Barbara Ann.

The Old Chicagoan was behind schedule due to a track repair.
