indirect quotation – a rephrasing or summary of what was said or written (a.) Don’t use quotation marks with indirect quotations. Example: According to their statement to the press, the Smiths will refuse to cut the timber because of potential damage to the environment. (NOTE: The above sentence is a summary of the original statement of the Smiths that was used in the Section 1 (a) example.) Example: My German professor told me that my accent is abominable. (NOTE: This sentence is an indirect quote; therefore, it does not need quotes.)Indirect Quotations
